Kenneth Mortenson, 98

Kenneth Mortenson of South Haven, MN passed away Friday, Oct. 1, 2021, at the age of 98.

A celebration of his life will take place Sunday, Oct. 17 at the Lake Union Covenant Church, 74526 County Road 19 in South Haven, MN, from 1 to 4 p.m.

There will be a second celebration of Mort’s life on his birthday, Wednesday, April 27, 2022.

He was born in Souris, ND April 27, 1923.

“Mort” was discharged from the Army in 1945. He settled in Minneapolis and began his truck driving career.

In 1978, after driving 2,242,179 injury-free miles, he was named Minnesota Driver of the Month for which he received a ring he proudly wore.

He retired at the age of 58 and enjoyed 40 years on Lake Francis and spent many winters in Yuma, AZ.

You can take the boy out of the farm, but you can’t take the farm out of the boy. He spent many years helping with “spring work” and combining in North Dakota with his nephew, Duane Branson, and Westhope, Renae, and Jason Rayner, his niece, in Finley.

He loved his 20 acres on the lake, doing a little farming, raising a few head of cattle, and, yes, he had a horse, Romeo.

He was always ready to play cards, do a little gambling, and loved his polka music.

He was a very kind man and will be missed by all.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Sigurd and Delia Mortenson; sister, Helen Branson; brother, Marvin; his wife, Ellen; and daughter, Barbara.

He is survived by his son, Kenneth Jr. ( Cookie ); daughter, Joyce Berg; stepson, Darrell Walberg; brother, Dannis; brother-in-law, Marlin Holm; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Betty and Dale Inselman; and seven grandchildren, Tonya Mortenson, Tina (Shawn) Poppe, Dan (Michelle) Walberg, Steve (Rhonda) Walberg, Mike (Carol) Walberg, Dave (Janice) Walberg, and Dana (Marty) Koelln, and many great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
