John Schutz Sr., 99

John Schutz Sr., age 99, of Sun City West, AZ, died in November 2021.

Services will take place at a later date, with interment at Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Anoka, MN.

John was born in October 1922, son of Joseph and Agnes Schutz.

John grew up in Golden Valley, MN and attended Meadowbrook Elementary when it was a three-room school house. He attended DeLaSalle High School, and graduated from St. Mary’s University.

As a young man, he studied to become a Christian Brother and teacher. However, he eventually chose the secular life, meeting Sue in Chicago, and marrying Thanksgiving Day in 1948, celebrating 72 years of marriage.

He continued staying in touch with current and former Christian Brothers through the Quicumque Club.

After several relocations of his family, while working as a sales manager with Ekco Home Products, his final transfer was to his home state of Minnesota. In 1960, he started his own successful manufacturers’ sales agency, The Schutz Company.

Upon retiring, he and Sue maintained homes in Anoka, MN and Surprise, AZ for several years, eventually making a permanent move to Arizona, where they lived for over 30 years. He and Sue traveled extensively after retirement.

They moved to the Heritage Independent Living apartments in Sun City West, where they made many new friends over the past five years.

He was a man of character and conviction, strong in his faith, with a good sense of humor, a German stubborn streak, and a friendly personality.

John was a devoted husband, loving father, and wonderful grandfather.

He had “farmer” genes, and enjoyed planting fruit trees, strawberries, raspberries, flowering plants of all kinds, and especially roses.

Growing up in the depression, he learned to become a do-it-yourself repairman, at times exasperating his family with his many “shortcuts.”

He was always interested in learning and new technology. Until his last few months, was very active on email, Facebook, and enjoyed writing about his family history and sharing old photos.

He will be greatly missed by family and many whose lives he touched.

John was preceded in death by daughter, Joanne Schutz; brothers, George, Leonard, Earl, Eugene, Marvin, Roger; and sister, Gladys Klipstein.

He is survived by his wife, Sophie (Sue) Schutz; children, Linda Schutz, Karen Coggins (Bill), Susanne Sims, Dr. John Schutz, II (Sandra); Grandchildren Sara Coggins, Alexandra, Payton, and Carter Schutz; Bonus grandchildren Jennifer Coggins and Jeffrey Larson; Sisters-in-law Florence Wysocki and Jan Schutz Buczek, several cousins, and many nieces and nephews.
