Vernon W. Raether, 89, of Mayer, MN, passed away Thursday, March 9, 2023, at the Good Samaritan Society in Waconia, MN.
A funeral service took place Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church (121 Bluejay Ave) in Mayer, with Rev. Andrew Mussell as officiant. Visitation took place from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service, all at the church. Interment took place in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred.
Vernon Walter Raether was born Sept. 21, 1933, in Watertown Township, MN, the son of Fred and Anna (Braun) Raether.
He was baptized Oct. 8, 1933, by Pastor Schneider, and confirmed in the faith March 30, 1947, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Waconia.
Vernon graduated from Watertown High School in 1951.
He joined the Army in 1955, and proudly served as an interpreter until his honorable discharge in 1962.
Vernon was united in marriage to Karen Lee Neuman at Trinity Lutheran Church Aug. 3, 1968, in Waconia, with Rev. John W. Stehr as officiant.
Vernon was a man of few words, but you knew he loved God, his family, his country, and his community and friends.
After his time in the service, he worked for Mayer Lumber, and then ABC Truss. He was also a member of the Mayer Fire Department for 20 years.
When not working, Vernon enjoyed volunteering for the Mayer Baseball Club. He enjoyed his morning routine in reading his Daily Portal of Prayers and the Star Tribune from cover to cover.
Vernon also appreciated a good game of cards, with Sheephead and 15-2 being a couple of his favorites.
Time with family was the most precious to him. He adored spoiling his grandchildren and attending their sporting events.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Anna Raether; brothers, Milton Raether, Gilbert Raether, Karl Raether, and William Raether; sisters, Hilda Young, Corda Raether, Helen Leiter, Ella Foulkroud, and Mary Ann Raether; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Albert and Dolores (Luedtke) Neumann.
Vernon is survived by his loving family: wife, Karen; children, Kyle (Katie) Raether of Chaska, MN, Kevin (Amy) Raether of Norwood Young America, MN, and Allison Raether of Chaska; grandchildren, Brianna and Matthew Schornack, Brooke Raether, Jacob Raether, and Hailey Raether; great-granddaughter, Kaelyne Schornack; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Virgil and Kathy Zellmann, and Shirley Kettner; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
